Grimhorn
Grimhorn [Grim-horn]
"Embattled"
The barren lands of the Ravensfield is where plant growth is sparse, and is a land of limited fertile soil. The Styrka Skedja Mountains have been known as a dangerous place for hundreds of years. It's unforgiving. There are few signs of vegetation beyond the treeline and the high winds are treacherous. Due to this environment subsistence farming is difficult, but remains the main stay, with wheat, barley and potatoes.
The Grimhorns are a poor people in terms of material wealth, especially those that live on or close to the Styrka Skedja Mountains. The line of pines that covers a portion of the mountains made live stock rearing impossible. On top of the geological issues, the northern half of Grimhorn, the mountains are largely dead land due to surges of magical power and the constant battles between the Grimhorns and the mages that have taken refuge in the Styrka Skedja Mountains. Grimhorn is one of two provinces that doesn't pay taxes because if they did, they would have no food stuffs left to survive upon the rest of the year.
How they came to be
Jhes'Khasti, God of Trickery created the Still Painter. These artists were given the divine gift of creation and destruction. Whatever was painted by the Painters would become reality. In a war against his brethren Jhes'Khasti used these beings in what would become known as the Still Painter War. The Grimhorns prior to this were like any ordinary human being. But with the war came change, and remade for a singular purpose, the Grimhorns hunt down the magical. The primary defense of the Gods against their brother, the Grimhorns continue to protect the world from magic gone array.
They now live at the base of the Styrka Skedja Mountains, filled with mages and necromancers who are either crazy or do not have the best intentions for the living or the dead. The Grimhorns fight not only the mages themselves but the monstrosities that the mages have created. In this, they protect the Holy Camarian Empire and the world from these horrors.
"These men would feel...odd. They felt as if there was nothing there, as magic could not target them. They were Grimhorns, magic immune, and natural mage hunters."
Society
The people are an honest, blunt sort who only hold back their words because they cannot risk losing able bodied men and women to stupid petty grudges or duels. The Grimhorns are a rough and tumble people, as is their way of life, and culture. Songs and ceremonies surround battle and fighting. Tracking mages is something taught to Grimhorn as children due to them not being able to innately feel magic. The first mage kill of a Grimhorn is celebrated as a milestone in a young person's life. They are then given the mummified finger of their first kill to always wear thereafter. This talisman is the means in which a Grimhorn can tell if magic is being done nearby.
Marriages outside of their people are frowned upon as their is a high chance of miscarriage between a Grimhorn and another whom is not a Grimhorn, because of the latent magic in most other peoples. Children of such unions that have managed to make it to term are usually born magic-less and empty like a Grimhorn.
A harsh way of life, they have not been able to support those members of society that could not fight, such as the disabled, and the unwell. Those born with such disadvantages were given to the temples of the Lady of Compassion to become the priests there, like those born intersex are given to the temple of He'ar Namin to become the priests too.. Its been the only way they could make it so they did not have to do the 'leave the weak or imperfect babies out to die.'
Grimhorns are new to the idea of marrying for love as life is shorter in Grimhorn so waiting for such a thing as love is not really viable if they want to keep the next generation going. Men and women are both taught to fight equally, its tradition that the first man who can beat a woman in fair one on one combat is to be their husband.
Due to being immune to magics, even divine effects do not work upon Grimhorns. This has left them bereft of the closeness of the Gods. Many are agnostic, or they must believe based on faith alone unlike any other peoples on Cor'terrae.
